How to rotate an image

Why photos come out sideways

Phone cameras record the same pixels however you hold them, and add an orientation tag telling software which way up the photo goes. Apps that read the tag show it correctly; apps that ignore it show it on its side. That's why one photo can look fine on your phone and sideways after you upload it.

Rotating here bakes the correct orientation into the pixels, so the image looks the same everywhere — including in software that ignores the tag.

Rotating vs. mirroring

A rotation turns the image; a mirror flips it, producing a reversed copy. Mirroring is what you want for a selfie that reads backwards, or to match the direction a subject faces. They combine: rotate first, then mirror the result.

What happens to quality

Quarter turns move whole pixels, so nothing is resampled and no detail is lost in the rotation itself. JPGs are re-encoded on the way out, which is a small, one-time cost at the high quality used here — save once rather than rotating the same JPG back and forth repeatedly. PNG and WebP outputs stay lossless.

A note on your photo's hidden data

Saving through the browser's canvas strips the file's metadata, so the rotated copy carries no EXIF: no GPS location, camera model, or timestamp. That's usually welcome before sharing a photo publicly, but it does mean the date and location are gone from the copy — keep the original if you need them.

Why does my photo look sideways only in some apps?
