Why convert PNG to JPG?

PNG is a lossless format, which makes it wonderful for editing and terrible for sharing photos: a photographic PNG is routinely 5-10x larger than the same image as a JPG, with no visible benefit. Converting gets you past email attachment caps and form upload limits, and JPG opens on effectively every device, app, and website ever made.

What happens to transparency

JPG has no concept of transparent pixels, so any transparent areas in your PNG are composited onto a solid white background during conversion. For photos and screenshots this is invisible. For logos or graphics that need to sit on a colored background, keep the PNG, or convert to WebP, which supports transparency at a much smaller size.

Choosing a quality setting

The default 90% is visually identical to the original for almost all photos while still cutting the file dramatically, a 2 MB PNG screenshot typically lands in the 300-600 KB range. Drop to 80-85% when file size matters more than pixel-level fidelity, such as email attachments. Below about 70%, compression artifacts start to show around text and sharp edges, so screenshots with a lot of text are better kept at high quality, or left as PNG.
